FarCry 2 to have the same DRM as Spore
Ubisoft has confirmed that the PC version of Far Cry 2 will have the same DRM used on the latest Electronic Arts titles, such as Spore, Crysis Warehead and Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. The anti-piracy system forbids players to install the software more than five times. Also, they cannot install it in more than 3 different PC’s. However, the moment players uninstall the game, they unlock one of the five activations available, so it can be used again for a new install.
This last feature allows owners to update their own PC without losing the number of activations available (but it takes a full disinstallation and reinstallation process everytime the user needs a hardware update). Ubisoft declares however that this rigid protection system should be lessened a few months after the initial release, but for now that’s the procedure they’ll take to avoid the piracy. This DRM from SecuROM has already brought a five-million-dollar lawsuit for Spore, where users claimed tat the software included on the anti-piracy system cannot be removed unless by formatting the Hard Disk.
Far Cry 2 will be released on October 23rd for PC, PlayStation 3 and XBox 360.
