Portal: Still Alive on Live Arcade breaks size record
At first there was a limit of 50 MB. It was, back in the day, an achievement by Konami, in agreement with Microsoft, to raise the downloadable files size limit beyond the first 50 MB established on Live Arcade, in order to reach the users that didn’t have a hard disk, but at least had a memory card. Back then, the Japanese developer needed to bring Castlevania: Symphony of the Night into the Microsoft’s digital delivery system and had to raise the file size for game.
The limit was moved up yet again, until the latest rule that established the maximum filze size for a Live Arcade game: 350 MB (proposed particularly for EA Sports Fantasy Football Live Draft Tracker, that had 334 MB).
With Portal: Still alive, it seems that the file size limitations have been definitely removed. Valve’s game has indeed a file size that is a record for Microsoft’s online service: 629 MB, definitely superior than any game seen so far at Live Arcade. This obviously means that the limit no longer exists, but it’s still to be seen whether it was completely removed or just set up on a higher value. Especially now that it’s common to assume the Hard Disk as an essential item for any XBox 360 user, especially with the New XBox Experience coming on November 19th.
