Fallout 3: Still on the violence theme, Bethesda speaks
Fallout 3 has been getting the center of the attention this game season, in good and bad ways. It’s been getting high votes from critics and players, but the game’s violence is also the center of discussion. After the strange choice made by Bethesda, that removed all the game trailers until the game’s release on the market, the developers go back to the violence subject, in an interview published by the British magazine Edge.
Lead designer Emil Pagliarulo has affirmed that the team had to make some choices, at the development stages, to reduce the violent impact that could have been even greater, particularly when it comes to children. Fallout is, in fact, a game series that allow for some quite cruel scenes, reason why the team decided to pull the breaks a little. “This is a series that in previous installments allowed players to kill children, right? When Bethesda first started developing Fallout 3, we had early conversations about whether you’re going to be able to blow the kids’ heads off”, says Pagliarulo. “But then we began to think, really what benefit would there be in killing the kids in the game? It just seems gratuitous, unnecessary and cruel”. He continues: “You really have to balance out and consider if doing violence to a child in a game is so important to your story that it outweighs any kind of social responsibility you might have”
